There are more than 1600+ Melbourne cafes and restaurants for customers to choose from, as data from the City of Melbourne shows.

So how do you stand out in an increasingly crowded café market? We’ll show you.

Here are our 2 cents on how to stand out in the Melbourne café scene.

Exceptional Customer Service (and we mean exceptional!)

  1. Quality coffee and produce each and every single time.
  2. Location(helps), Branding(important) and of course Social Media(crucial)

1. Exceptional Customer Service

Greet every customer the second they walk in. ‘Good morning, take a seat, I’ll be right with you!’

Even if it’s chaos and your hands are full and there are a million things going on… SMILE and just a simple ‘G’day I’ll be with you in just a moment’ goes a long way.

Remembering customer’s orders is a BIG one.

Macchiato as usual? No sugar, right?

Even if you are not 100% sure, the fact that you’ve attempted to remember is a nice gesture.

TIP: Repeat the order out loud a few times and you’ll remember it in no time.

Also, invite standing customers waiting for their coffee to take a seat and make sure your customers feel relaxed and at home.

Tell them to help themselves to some water or a newspaper and you’ll be with them in a jiffy!

2. Quality, Quality, Quality!

Quality.

Think you may have burnt that milk? Throw it out and start again.

Cappuccino looking more like a confused flat white? Start again.

Toast not buttered to all edges? This is criminal. Stop. And do it right.

These little things alllll matter and add to the overall café experience.

So, slow down and take the time to deliver quality every single time.

3. Location, Branding and Social Media

Location: Of course, you should be in an area where there is an enough foot traffic. However, appeal is everything; match your café theme with your location and branding. Consider all the directions people might approach your café from, and make sure your branding and signage covers every angle.

A unique brand as a café makes you outstanding.

It communicates what your café offers, and the quality to be expected.

Everything about your café should reflect your brand; from your logo to the outlay of your café, your packaging to your social media.

Then give a frapp about your social media – Less than 45% of hospitality based business are using social media?!

Instagram posts, hashtags, social media reviews and check-ins. If you’re not using social media to engage with your customers – someone else will.

These are now crucial components of standing out in an overcrowded market.

In closing.

Whether you’re focused on making incredible silky lattes or serving only homegrown or organic products, make it your own.

And put your blinkers on and don’t worry about the competition.

There is only one you, this is your café and your vision.

It’s only you that can turn your cafe into the bean crunching machine you’ve dreamed of.

The floor is all yours.
